What are Locations in Lorcana?

Okay, so what are the Disney Lorcana locations rules? How do locations work in Lorcana, and why should you add them to your deck?

Locations in Lorcana are supporting cards that will help you execute your strategies. All Lorcana locations generate lore passively, helping you inch closer to your 20 Lore end goal.

Locations are a reliable way to buff your character cards. Locations feature effects that can boost your strategy. For example, Fang - River City gives a character card the “Ward” and “Evasive” keywords, making them more difficult to attack.

Once you learn how to use locations in Lorcana consistently, you’ll be well on your way to

How Do Locations Work in Lorcana?

Lorcana locations rules are simple to learn. All Lorcana locations can be played just like character and item cards. Pay their ink cost (the game’s form of mana), and they’ll start generating lore for you.

But how do locations work in Lorcana with the other cards in play? Can you remove an opponent’s locations from play, or are you stuck watching them get closer to the lore goal?

Locations cards are as vulnerable as any card. Let’s dive into the detailed rules.

Activating Location Cards

The rules for how to use locations in Lorcana are simple. You activate them by paying the ink cost and placing it onto your battlefield.

Unlike character cards, Lorcana locations rules allow them to be used on the first term they enter. This can lead to impactful combos once you learn the ins and outs.

Effects of Location Cards on Gameplay

Let’s dive into some of these combos. How do locations work in Lorcana?

There are several unique benefits to placing location cards on the field:

  • Generating Lore: Every turn your location cards are on the field, they generate lore for you. This will vary based on the card itself. The bottom right corner of a card shows how much lore a location will generate. For example, Kuzco’s Palace - Home of the Emperor gives you 1 lore per turn.
  • Positive Buffs: A unique element of the Lorcana locations rules is the unique effects many of them provide. For example, Winter Camp - Medical Tent removes damage from your character cards, keeping your board strong.
  • Opponent Debuffs: The flip side of this dynamic is also true. Some location cards can impair the opponent’s strategy. Tropical Rainforest - Jaguar Lair can force a character to challenge rather than quest, which can help you eliminate your opponent’s cards.

How Location Cards Interact with Other Card Types

How do locations work in Lorcana regarding other card classes?

Your character cards interact directly with your and your opponents' location cards. You can pay a location card’s mana cost to place your characters inside a location, giving them access to buffs.

For example, Thebes - The Big Olive gives you 2 extra lore whenever a stationed character wins a challenge. This can be a mighty swing of lore, giving you a card advantage and helping you inch closer to winning.

Characters can challenge location cards just like other characters. Just declare your attack, and if it’s enough to exhaust the location’s “willpower,” it will be removed from play.

Note that some item cards or removal effects do not remove locations. If a card does damage, make sure it says “characters and locations” before using it.

Locations aren’t just for challenges. Some also interact with the singing mechanic, like Atlantica - Concert Hall, which boosts the lore cost of singing characters to give you more lore.

Disney Lorcana Locations List

The best way to get a closer look at how Lorcana locations work is to check out some examples. While this Disney Lorcana locations list doesn’t cover them all, it’s a great starting point to show you their power.

  • Bad-Anon - Villain Support Center: Villain Support Center from Wreck-it Ralph is a powerful card if your deck is full of bad guys. It allows villains to play cards featuring themselves for free, which could help you finish off your strategy.
  • Belle’s House - Maurice’s Workshop: Maurice’s Workshop is a solid piece of any Sapphire deck. It lowers the ink cost for items by 1, which gives you the flexibility to see out your game plan.
  • Rapunzel’s Tower - Secluded Prison: Rapunzel’s Tower was made with protection in mind. It gives the stationed character 3 extra willpower, which can help you keep your questing or singing strategy safe from challenges.
  • Ariel’s Grotto - A Secret Place: Ariel’s Grotto doesn’t generate lore naturally. But with its effect, it can produce two lore per turn, putting your opponent on a timer. Like Maurice’s Workshop, it can play a central role in a Sapphire deck focused on items.
  • The Underworld - River Styx: When you think of The Underworld from Hades, it should be no surprise that this location helps you bring back cards from “the dead.” You can bring back any card in your discard pile for 3 ink when a character quests here, helping you get more use out of your game-winning cards.
  • Snuggly Duckling - Disreputable Pub: Snuggly Duckling will be the perfect battery for an aggressive Ruby deck. Stationed characters get extra lore with each challenge–win or lose–including a whopping 3 lore if that character has 6 or more strength.
  • The Wall - Border Fortress: The Wall serves a unique function among locations–it keeps your other locations safe. With an exerted character stationed here, your other locations cannot be challenged, which can help you keep your strategy alive even with scary opponent cards on the board.
  • RLS Legacy - Solar Galleon: The RLS Legacy is another fantastic attacking location. It gives stationed cards the Evasive keyword, letting you accumulate lore uncontested.
  • Pride Lands - Pride Rock: Pride Lands is a versatile location with multiple effects. It gives 2 willpower to stationed characters. If that character is a Prince or King card, you also get a -1 ink cost on any character card you play. This card is excellent for building tempo and hitting your win condition.
  • The Queen’s Castle - Mirror Chamber: Mirror Chamber is another does-it-all card. It gives two lore each turn, which is rare among location cards by default. Each card stationed here also lets you draw a card at the start of your turn. Amethyst decks live and die by their ability to hit combos, so this powerful effect can win you games on its own.

How to Use Locations in Lorcana to the Fullest

We’ve covered how locations work in Lorcana. So how can you win games with them?

We’ll go over the specifics of Disney Lorcana deck building rules and show you how locations exist in the balance of characters, items, and songs to help you find success.

Choosing the Right Locations for Your Deck

For starters, your location cards should complement the strategy of your deck. You’ll need to match the ink color of your card with the rest of your deck–Lorcana only allows you two ink colors in any given match.

Choose locations to complement your playstyle. If you plan to challenge your opponent with an aggressive Ruby deck, select location cards with bonuses like evasive or increases to lore to help you win faster.

Make sure you have some flexibility as well. If your primary strategy doesn’t work because your opponent’s deck counters it, you want to ensure some of your locations can help with multiple tasks simultaneously, like willpower boosts and card draw.

We recommend investing in Disney Lorcana starter decks to get started. Once you know how the best Lorcana starter decks are built, you can add new location cards to match your preferred playstyle.

Balancing Locations with Other Card Types

Lorcana decks require at least 60 cards and have a maximum of 4 copies for cards.

As such, you don’t want to stuff your deck with 4 copies of 15 different locations and call it a day. Most locations require characters, items, or songs to get the most value.

Usually, 4 to 8 location cards are a nice sweet spot. This makes it relatively likely you’ll find a location in your first few hands. Your opening hand may lack characters and items if you have too many location cards. This would leave locations extremely vulnerable to enemy challenges.

The fun of Lorcana deckbuilding is tweaking your strategy. The game gives you a blank canvas to test out new strategies. So don’t feel too pressured to get it ‘perfect’ on the first try–play around with card distribution to find a playstyle that works for your preferences.

The best way to experience the gameplay quirks of locations is to invest in a starter deck and other Lorcana cards. But where should you go to buy them?
